How Far In Advance Should I Apply For A China Travel Visa?

Here’s an overview of China Visa timeframes and how to avoid problems

Bad news: don’t expect a quick and simple resolution to your China travel visa, unless you get really lucky. The clock you’re racing is administrative, not athletic. Alongside the actual application, you’ll need to leave room to secure an appointment, satisfy photo and fingerprint rules, and glide past public-holiday closures that snarl processing.

The Short Answer

Aim to submit about two months out. Anything inside four weeks is doable but tight and leaves little slack for document fixes or a missed appointment at your local Chinese Visa Application Service Center. Anything earlier than three months risks getting a visa that may expire before you use it, which Chinese missions explicitly caution against in their FAQs.

What Processing Times Look Like In Practice

Once lodged, ordinary applications typically take four working days, with an express option around three working days where available. That’s reflected in guidance from the Chinese Embassy in London’s FAQ and repeatedly by missions in the United States, which note “usually four working days” and “three working days” for expedited cases when approved in advance in their own FAQ. Working days exclude weekends and both Chinese and local holidays, so a Thursday submission before a long weekend won’t be ready on Monday.

Why Three Months Is The Upper Limit

Chinese missions warn against applying too early because visa validity runs from the date of issue, not your flight date. Historic consular guidance illustrates the pattern — single-entry visas are generally valid for three months from issue and doubles for six months — so filing far in advance can paint you into a corner if plans slip. See the New York Consulate’s notice explaining typical validity windows and urging applicants not to jump too early here. Keep that in mind if you’re a chronic early bird.

Book The Appointment Before You Buy Non-Refundables

Most applicants must appear in person, as fingerprints are collected at the visa center unless you fall into limited exemptions. The booking links sit on your local CVASC portal and the online form lives on the official China Online Visa Application system. Appointment slots can bunch up ahead of peak periods, so secure the slot first, then lock in flights you can’t change.

Documents That Commonly Trigger Delays

Passports should have at least six months’ validity left at application and at least two blank visa pages. That is spelled out by CVASC London’s published checklist for passports and by the Embassy’s “How to apply” page for the UK. Use the CVASC London requirements page for the exact wording on validity and pages here and cross-check against the UK’s official entry page for China here. If you’re applying from the US, the State Department’s China page mirrors the six-month-plus-two-pages rule in its Quick Facts, and Canadians get the same six-month note on the federal travel advisory.

Biometrics And Photos

Fingerprints are standard now. Visa centers consistently state that applicants must appear in person unless they’re in age-based or narrow temporary exemption groups, and those exemptions vary by mission and date. Representative notices from visa centers make the point bluntly and list the under-14 and over-70 exemptions and five-year repeat-print waivers.

See recent policy notes from Toronto’s center here. Photos are fussy: white background, taken within six months, 48×33 mm, with exact head measurements as set out in the CVASC photo spec here. Bring a compliant spare print to your appointment even if you uploaded one online.

Watch The Holiday Calendar

Processing days vanish around Chinese public holidays, and visa offices also close for local holidays. Trying to get a China travel visa at the last minute just before, for example, Chinese New Year, it nigh on impossible. The State Council publishes the national holiday calendar here each year, so check your application window doesn’t clash.

City sites echo the details, like Beijing’s Labor Day. If your submission or pickup hits those windows, add at least a week of buffer.

When You’ve Left It Late

Inside six weeks, get the earliest CVASC appointment and keep the itinerary simple. Standard service is still the default four working days in most posts, with a three-day express option where pre-approved, as noted by London’s FAQ and US mission guidance in Los Angeles and elsewhere.

If you truly can’t make the timing work, you may be able to restructure your route to rely on China’s transit-without-visa policy instead of a full visa.

A Quick Word On Transit-Without-Visa And Visa-Free Policies

If you’re in genuine transit to a third country, China’s expanded visa-free transit now permits up to 240 hours in designated regions for eligible nationalities, per the National Immigration Administration’s policy updates here and the consolidated port and region list here. The expansion to 55 countries in mid-2025 was also reported by international outlets like Reuters.

For a clear, practitioner-style explainer that tracks the moving parts, Dezan Shira’s overview remains useful background reading here. If you qualify for unilateral visa-free entry rather than transit, you might not need a visa at all for a short visit. Check your passport’s status on the NIA policy page before you file.

The Bottom Line

Give yourself 1–3 months from first click to pickup. Book the appointment before you purchase non-refundable flights. Respect the six-month passport rule and the two blank pages. Expect four working days once lodged, three if your local mission offers approved expedited service. Avoid filing so early that validity lapses before you travel. If the timing still fights you, sense-check whether visa-free transit or visa-free entry applies to your passport.
